Ludwig van Beethoven, a German composer, played a crucial role in the transition between the Classical and Romantic eras in Western art music. He stands as one of the most celebrated and impactful composers of all time. Beethoven's repertoire includes 9 symphonies, 5 piano concertos, 1 violin concerto, 32 piano sonatas, 16 string quartets, the monumental Mass the Missa solemnis, and the opera Fidelio.

Born in Bonn, then part of the Holy Roman Empire and the capital of the Electorate of Cologne, Beethoven demonstrated his musical prowess at a young age under the tutelage of his father Johann van Beethoven and composer/conductor Christian Gottlob Neefe. He relocated to Vienna at 21, where he studied composition with Joseph Haydn and earned acclaim as a virtuoso pianist. Beethoven resided in Vienna until his passing. Struggling with progressive hearing loss in his late 20s, he was nearly deaf by his final years. In 1811, he retired from conducting and public performances but continued to compose; many of his most revered works emerged in the last 15 years of his life.
